This is a common thing to hear around the house now that our lives have become so involved. People have little time to pay proper attention to the stove with the kids running around the house and the phone ringing off the hook. As Firefighters we know that this is one of the major causes of household fires to date. The pot left unattended on the stove. Some of the things you can do to prevent this from happening is to not leave the stove unattended at all. A number of things can happen with the stove unattended:
#1- Is if you have young children in the household they could pull the pot over on themselves causing major burns to thier bodies.
#2- Is that you could run down to the store because you forgot some bread, returning to see your house in Flames.(it has happened before)
#3-The phone is for you and you think "I will only be on it for a minute" returning to see the pot of stew is in flames.
I could go on forever about this but I will not, Instead I will give you some hints on what to do "just in case"
The first thing I suggest is not to leave the stove unattended at all.
Turn the handles of any pots you are using to cook in away from the front of the stove so little hands cannot reach them.
Turn the Stove off if you have to "Run to the Store " The food will keep until you return.
If the phone call is for you have someone take a message for you, or donot answer the phone at all "if it was important they will call back".
If you come into the Kitchen and find the stove on fire. If You can reach the stove turn the heat off of the pot that is on Fire . Second if you can put the cover on the pot that is on Fire DO IT. If you cannot try Baking soda or salt (both will do the same thing)
DO NOT USE FLOUR This can cause the fire to increase in size.
IF YOU CANNOT REACH THE STOVE----"GET OUT OF THE HOUSE" AND CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT FROM THE NEIGHBORS
These are only suggestions not the rules to live by.
